    Description

TRIDACNA GIGAS OBJETS DE PRESTIGE EN MÉLANÉSIE
by Eric Lancrenon & Didier Zanette and published by Au Vent Des Isles in 2011.  Incredible work on Melanesian objects made from the shell of the giant clam.  Hundreds of photographs of objects as well as historical field photographs.  FRENCH LANGUAGE.  Oversized 280 page hardcover in like new condition with protective archival Brodart cover.
An exceptional material, the fossil stoup has given rise to unique and eminently precious objects, prized by men of power in Melanesia. To maintain the prerogatives due to their social position, the latter had to display unusual badges. Unlike wood carvings, the fossil stoup, resistant to degradation of time, has favored for many generations the donation from father to son of these priceless goods, which has helped to fuel the divine character of certain objects. The difficulty of the time in acquiring such pieces has reverberated and amplified today. This shortage explains why, for a long time, these objects were ignored by Westerners and why so few prototypes remain in the collections today. This book is intended to restore them to their deserved place in the pantheon of Oceanic artwork.
